In the final chapter of the Hero Twins saga, Hunahpu and Xbalanque, having successfully vanquishing the gods of Xibalba, climb back up to the surface of the Earth. Upon reaching earth, they continued climbing straight on up into the sky. One became the Sun, the other the Moon. 

This ring represents the sun and moon in their eternal orbit the spine shaped band is a reminder of their human origins. Orbital position of each of the four ring sizes is different, so when multiples are aligned and stacked together on one finger, a spiral is created.
