One-of-a-kind
PROCESS
A lengthy production process renders each Hahnoma one-of-a-kind. The process begins with a visit to a local rooftop hive in Brooklyn, New York. There, abandoned honeycomb is gathered from empty hives, which is later coated with natural shellacs in preparation for “lost-wax” casting. During casting the wax honeycomb is entirely burned away and its shape replaced with molten gold — no reusable molds are made in the process, so each piece is entirely unique. The result is a perfect 18k gold replica of the found honeycomb sculpted by honeybees.
The cast honeycomb is then crafted into an aesthetically appropriate shape and resulting gold scrap is recycled. The cluster is assembled onto an adjustable leather cord with a unique gold clasp and packaged in a glass dome with a rubber stopper.
CONCEPTHahnoma or “White Man’s Fly” is part of the Theft of Light Collection. Theft of Light draws its inspiration from Navajo Shamanic traditions and the Tisimshian legend accounting for the origins of daylight. Theft of Light is conceptually situated at the crossroads Native American mythology and an urban-outsider instinct. The collection introduces large and bold customizable looks using re-purposed traditions and up-cycled salvaged materials.
COMMUNITY
10% of the proceeds will benefit local beekeeping efforts by The Brooklyn Bee (www.thebrooklynbee.com). No bees were displaced to create Hahnoma. For more information about Colony Collapse Disorder visit www.ANewHive.org.
