Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons

Established in 2005, Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons is the work of Derrick R. Cruz. Cruz was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised on the island of Puerto Rico.

Guided by funerary crafts, alchemical studies and primitive mythology, his varied works emerge as conceptual conduits between materialism and intuition – contemporary archetypes seeking to reconcile instinct with the exponential repercussions of modern living.

Derrick R. Cruz is the recipient of several international honors including: winner of GEN ART’s Design Vision Award, Semi-finalist of the 2009/10 Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award, and Icarus Excellence in Painting Award. Exhibitions include: Spring Gallery of Brooklyn, Santa Monica Museum of Art, and Tribeca Grand Art Exhibitions. Cruz’s works have been featured in numerous publications: ArtForum; Time Magazine; The New York Times; Forbes; Interview; New York Magazine; Purple; among others.

Cruz lives and works in Manhattan and is a faculty member at Parson’s New School for Design.
